With the onset of winter weather, Colorado motorists and truck drivers must begin to contend with black ice and poor visibility among the many other hazards on streets, roads and highways. Distracted drivers, speeding, tire blowouts and dangerous curves are among the constant dangers that lie between motor vehicle occupants and a safe evening at home.

The Colorado State Patrol (CSP) recently identified nearly two dozen stretches of state and interstate highways that will receive special attention and trooper presence based on recent car accident reports. Local CSP troop captains chose the targeted roadways based on departmental knowledge and trends in reports of drunken driving, improper lane changes and other infractions.

Among the targeted areas is a stretch of I-25 in Loveland. Another highway targeted by the CSP is C-470 between Alameda Avenue and Santa Fe Boulevard in the Denver-metro area, which in 2010 had the state’s highest rate of accidents that resulted in injury or death. The next highest rate was on I-25 between Fort Collins and Johnstown, which will also receive focused attention.

The emphasis will be on changing driver behavior through increased trooper presence. CHP data shows that most of the leading causes of vehicle crashes are avoidable based on driver adherence to traffic laws and common sense. Aside from crashes involving animals on the roadway, the most common causes all relate to human errors, recklessness or negligence:

  • Excessive speed
  • Driver inattention
  • Lane violations
  • Tailgating
  • Intoxicated driving
  • Failure to yield right of way

Whether a driver’s negligence causes property damage, serious personal injury or a wrongful death, a motor vehicle accident claim is a way to seek legal accountability for drivers who haven’t been stopped by law enforcement. A Denver car accident lawyer can help injury victims and surviving family members with every aspect of damages litigation.
