The flu is still here, just as strong as ever. And, before we know it, allergy season will be here, too – not just here, but… here, there, everywhere! All over the news, the schools, the office… and even on our roads. When someone takes over-the-counter cold and flu medications, can it affect their ability to drive safely? The answer is yes.

Popular over-the-counter medications contain ingredients that may impair the reaction time of a driver. “May Cause Drowsiness” actually may cause automobile accidents. And it’s not just over-the-counter medications, but also those prescribed by a doctor and even some herbal supplements.

The reality is that driving under the influence of medication can be as dangerous as driving under the influence of alcohol. Recent studies have shown taking a dose of a cold medicine is equivalent to drinking two to three glasses of wine. The FDA provides information on the safe use of medicine and, as a precautionary measure, anyone who is prescribed medication should discuss the potential effects with their doctor. But the best safeguard, obviously, is to not get behind the wheel. Don’t let a side effect become a negative effect.
