Summer is just around the corner and the kids are almost out of school, so that can mean only one thing… road trips! With airline prices skyrocketing, more and more families are hitting the highways for summer vacations. Before you load the family into the car and take off for your adventures, make sure you are prepared for any situation you may encounter. Below are a few ideas to get you started.

1. Check your insurance policy.

Speak with your agent about any coverage that may have lapsed over time to be assured that you are sufficiently protected in case of an accident. Check to see if your policy includes roadside assistance and if it doesn’t, add it on.

2. Bring your automobile in for maintenance.

Be sure your mechanic knows that you will be driving long distances and ask to have the tires and all systems checked thoroughly.

3. Buy a good map.

If you have a smartphone you have GPS, but sometimes our treasured electronic devices don’t have all the correct information. You’ll save yourself time and limit frustration with a paper map backup. When you are certain of the route to your destination, you are more focused and, ultimately, that may lessen the chances of being involved in an automobile accident.

4.Purchase a portable phone charger and hands-free device.

You always need a fully-charged phone for any roadside emergencies and to make or check on accommodation needs. It also might be a good idea to research the cell phone laws of all the states you’ll be traveling through.

5. Create an emergency kit to keep in the trunk.

Include bottled drinking water, non-perishable snacks, blankets, a flashlight and anything else you think you might need. You’ll want provisions if you find yourself stuck on the side of the road for hours waiting for assistance.

6. Buy a good first aid kit.

Add medications your family members will/might need, sunscreen and bug repellent.

Being as prepared as possible for long automobile trips will give you peace of mind and help make your vacations more relaxing and enjoyable. It’s much easier combatting problems from home than when on the road!
