The safety of our families is our highest priority. We teach our children to not cross busy streets, we take them to the doctor for checkups, and we buckle them into our cars no matter how short the trip. We also do all we can to make them happy, including giving them toys at the holiday season. But what happens when a toy is defective and a child is injured? With a little preparation and knowledge, you may be able to avoid a holiday disaster.

The toys we buy in the U.S. come from over the world and when demand increases so does production and the possibility that quality control can go down. Manufacturers are required to make toys safe under any circumstance, yet the U.S. Product Safety Commission estimates that each year approximately 120,000 children are treated in emergency rooms for toy-related injuries. You can take precautions to help ensure the safety of the toys you purchase by taking a little extra time to really examine the product.

1. Read labels carefully – select toys that are age-appropriate and suit the child’s skill level.
2. Avoid toys with small parts that can create a choking hazard.
3. Look for sturdy construction and high quality.
4. Discard plastic wrapping immediately as it can cause suffocation.
5. Be aware of recalls – set up a Google alert for the manufacturer, or sign up for recall alerts.

Taking precautions is the first line of defense, but a defective product could still end up wrapped and under your tree. Companies have a responsibility to keep consumers safe from potential hazards and toy manufacturers can be held liable if a child is injured by one of their products.
